Lieutenant Colonel Paul T. Sullivan
"Sully"
Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan was born in St. Petersburg, Florida on 14 December 1967. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from The University of Florida in August 1990 and earned a commission in the Marine Corps through the Platoon Leaders Course. LtCol Sullivan entered the Marine Corps in August 1990 and upon completion of The Basic School, he was ordered to Marine Aviation Training Squadron Pensacola, Florida for Primary Flight instruction. Following his designation as a Naval Aviator in January 1993, LtCol Sullivan reported to HMT-204 at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina for CH-46E pilot training.
After completing Replacement Aircrew Training in the CH-46E, he was assigned to HMM-165, Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. While with HMM-165 LtCol Sullivan participated in the squadron’s Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan and supported exercises in Thailand and South Korea. In conjunction with the transfer of all CH-46E squadrons from Kaneohe Bay, LtCol Sullivan moved to Okinawa, Japan and was attached to HMM-364 then later to HMM-262 and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. While with these units LtCol Sullivan served as the Embarkation Officer, Flight Training Officer, and Logistics Officer supporting exercises in South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.
Following his tour with HMM-262, LtCol Sullivan was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division Aviation Section to function as the Air Controller and Naval Air Gunfire Platoon Commander. While with 3rd MarDiv, LtCol Sullivan participated in South Korean Exercise Ulchi Focus Lens and the first combined exercise with Australian Ground Forces, Tandem Thrust 97.
In July of 1997 LtCol Sullivan transferred to Naval Air Station Whiting Field to function as a Primary Flight Instructor in the T-34C. Assigned to VT-6, LtCol Sullivan assisted with the transition to the Joint Primary Training Syllabus while accumulating over 1700 Instructional Hours in the T-34C.
In July of 2000, LtCol Sullivan returned to Okinawa, Japan and was attached to Marine Air Group 36, as the Current Operations Officer. After nearly six months in Operations, LtCol Sullivan transferred to HMM-265 (REIN) to function as the Director of Safety and Standardization and later as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer. While with HMM-265, LtCol Sullivan supported numerous operations and exercises around the Far East to include Humanitarian Assistance Operations in East Timor.
Upon completion of his Maintenance Officer assignment with HMH-265 in July 2003, LtCol Sullivan reported to United States Central Command in Tampa, FL. While with CENTCOM, LtCol Sullivan worked as the J-3 Amphibious Officer, a Joint Operations Center Naval Desk Officer and the J-3 Executive Assistant. As a member of the CENTCOM J-3 Staff, LtCol Sullivan supported all operations in the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility to include Iraq and Afghanistan from both Tampa and numerous forward based locations.
In June 2006, LtCol Sullivan was ordered to Marine Corps Air Facility (MCAF) Quantico to function as the Executive Officer. As the XO of the airfield, he coordinated numerous efforts to better support the airfield’s primary tenant, HMX-1, to include a massive $250 million construction and renovation project.
In Mach 2009, LtCol Sullivan was ordered to Marine Aviation Training and Support Group 21 to function as the Group Executive Officer and T-6A Instructor Pilot.
LtCol Sullivan’s personal decorations include the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
